Amendment To Ontario Fire Code Requires Smoke Alarms On Every Level Of Home

On December 13, 2005 the Ontario Fire Code was amended to require that a working smoke alarm must be installed on each storey of a dwelling unit.

Residential Fire Statistics
· Over 90% of residential fires are preventable
· 1 out of every 100 preventable fires is a fatal fire

Smoke Alarms
· In 35% of fires, a smoke alarm was present and operated
· In 25% of fires, a smoke alarm was present and did not operate
· In 21% of fires, no smoke alarm was present
· In 19% of fires, smoke alarm operation was undetermined

Important Facts
· Never remove batteries from smoke alarms
· Replace smoke alarms at least every 10 years
· Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries every year
· Develop and practice a Fire Escape Plan
